Her belief in the devil already strong because of her religious upbringing, it's obviously solidified in the physical sense when he manifests and has his way with her, which is something that her conciense has trouble overcoming.Īll of this weirdness is wrapped up in a very attractive package in terms of the film's cinematography. Sister Maria, at least initially, knows that what she's doing is wrong and we see her go through the motions of punishing herself for it, even if that same punishment yields some rather unusual results. The film also does a good job of toying around with the theme of Catholic guilt. It all works though - Satanico Pandemonium is pretty entertaining stuff and while it doesn't go as far as some of the other nasty nuns films made in and around the same era in terms of sex and violence, it certainly has enough of it to keep things interesting. It hits all the requirements that the Italians set out for the subgenre and taps each one of them on the head as it walks around it quaintly. Satanico Pandemonium has everything a good nunsploitation film should have and then some. Will the good nuns of the convent be able to help Maria save her soul or will Maria kill everyone and run off with the devil to be his bride? The Mother Superior starts to notice Maria's unusual behavior and it isn't long before there's a dead body or two appearing around the convent courtesy of some mysterious but obviously evil deeds. She whips herself and ties a belt of thorns around her waist as any good Catholic would be apt to do in her situation but it's too little too late and before you can say lesbo-a-go-go the devil appears to her as a wiley and randy sister of the cloth only to make mad and evil love to her on the floor of her room. She tries and tries to behave herself but by the time the movie hits the half way mark, it's obvious that just doesn't have what it take to stand up to ol' scratch himself. She returns to the convent to get back to her nunly duties but finds that his sinister and Satanic influence is beginning to take hold on her no matter how hard she prays against it. One day while out meandering in the woodlands surrounding her abode, she runs into a naked and evil man (Enrique Rocha) who's visage soon begins to haunt her day and night. She enjoys long strolls through the farmlands and forests surrounding her convent and is friend to a few children in the area. If you haven’t, well, now you have homework.Cecilia Pezet plays Sister Maria, a sweet little nun with a heart of gold who really only wants to help people and do the right thing in life. Of course, if you’re reading this, you’ve probably seen that movie. This movie has also served as an inspiration to others, particularly the name of Selma Hayek’s character in From Dusk Till Dawn. Well now, that’s a bite of a different apple… Huh, now that I think about it, Satánico pandemonium tempted me into being into films where nuns get down and dirty. Who doesn’t want to watch a movie called The Sexorcist? How could I not be into this? This movie has another name, La Sexorcista. It’s a film from a heavily Catholic culture exploring an ultimate taboo in that society. Yes, it shows torture, suicide, and random snakes in cups. When I was young, this was one of the first true nunsploitation movies I ever encountered and, well, I gotta admit I love these movies. You want evil? She’s happy to provide once she gets a taste. And Cecilia Pezet manages to take her leading lady role and go from sweet and kind to happily murderous without batting an eye. Here is a Lucifer who knows he has already won. His calm and smarmy demeanor was wonderful. So what about this movie stands out? I mean besides the pedophilia, the nun orgy where a bunch of prostitutes played the characters, or the showcasing of tortures? Enrique Rocha’s performance as Lucifer is entertaining. Just remember, not eating the apple won’t save you, as apparently seeing a naked Satan in Mexico is all it takes to turn you evil. And then it all comes to a head, with a twist ending that would probably rustle M. But Sister Maria is the most pure, and that’s why Satan goes for her! She tries to stop him, through acts of kindness, flagellation, and prayer, but it doesn’t work, and soon she’s trying to get with one of her Sisters, seducing an underage boy, and killing random folks. These nuns aren’t exactly good at what they do. There’s racism too, but funny enough that wasn’t caused by Satan. Satánico pandemonium centers on poor Sister Maria, who has been targeted by Satan to destroy her convent and lead her fellow nuns to Hell, through a combination of murder and sexuality. Who doesn’t love a good nunsploitation film? God knows I do.
